Holiday Season

So, Barbie and Ken have split up. The media made such an ordeal out of it after Mattel announced that the famous couple has decided to go their own ways. Surprisingly, people were upset about this announcement. Mattel reported getting lots of emails from upset fans over this decision. To those people, I say, Barbie and Ken are dolls. They are not real. You can still play with them and make-believe that they are a happily married couple. You don’t really have to tell your children that Barbie and Ken are divorcing or even worry about what to tell your kids. They are simply dolls.

As with most Americans, I have been exposed to Native American Indians in the literature and film I have watched since I was very young. Also like most Americans, these books and films have given me some pretty strange ideas. Our portrayal of American Indian culture is hardly a universally positive thing. Don’t get me wrong – there are some places where Native Americans come out looking very good. In some films – particularly more modern ones – they are seen as very noble people who are victims of greed and imperialism. Just as often, however, they are presented as primitive savages, there to be tamed along with the rest of the west by the “civilizing” influence of the invading culture. Halloween is a holiday for kids of all ages. Most people don’t celebrate the dark meaning of the holiday, they simply enjoy dressing up andhanging out with friends.
