Well, it looks like tomorrow night is the night. I hate to admit it, but it looks like the end is near. I can feel the hot breath of evil burning my neck as the moon grows full. What will we do on this frightful occasion? How will we escape the madness of angry spirits, haunting ghouls, demonic creatures, and ruthless creatures galore? In no time at all they will be frolicking blissfully throughout the streets, their sights set on home after home, and then they’ll be right upon your doorstep. What will you do? Hey, I’ve got an idea. Just give them some CANDY! That’s all they want. Once you hand it over, they’ll skip off with a smile stretched from ear to ear. I should know, I will be accompanying one of these little terrors tomorrow night, on Halloween. Now, I must gather the costume accessories and flashlights.

We are missing out! Am I wrong here or what? Whoever said that we adults can’t go trick-or-treating? May be I want to bust out some costume accessories and a plastic sword to hit up all the neighbors for booty. That’s loot, if you didn’t already know. Yep, pirate talk. Anyway, it just seems a bit biased to not let us parents gather as much candy as possible too. We need the sugar rush and vast selection of chocolate just like any kid does. What’s your take on this? I noticed that my 15 year old daughter was trick-or-treating a few years back and some neighbors got annoyed. What is this about? Are you telling me there is suddenly an age discrepancy with trick-or-treating? Give me a break. I tell you what; folks have gotten cheap or lame or both as the years have passed. I will pass out candy to anyone who steps up to my door in a costume on Halloween. It’s but one night out of the year.

Ah, the costume thing. This very well might be the best part of All Hallows Eve. It’s sort of a tossup between the costume accessories and the candy. However, I may have to choose the masks and costume accessories simply for escape reasons. These guises offer us a wonderful way to escape our redundant regime. Seeing that it only comes one out of 365 days in the year, I would take full advantage of it. Have an utter blast on Halloween!

What would be the ultimate costume you can imagine for Halloween night? No wait; let me guess; SpongeBob Square pants. Uh, okay maybe not. Think harder! What else is there these days? Heck, there’s pretty much anything you can ponder. Stop! I’ve got it. I know the ultimate costume you can take advantage of this Halloween. Are you ready for this one? A cop costume. No, I didn’t stutter. This is absolutely the greatest idea ever. Imagine all the things you could get away with on Halloween night in your trusty law enforcement uniform. Hey, I’m thinking this power could be addictive. What about you?

I guess you could say I saw a variety of get-ups last Halloween. I was out and about for a few hours. I took my little girl trick-or-treating. We had a blast scoping out all the fun and unique costumes. I think we must have seen about every variation there is. However, I don’t recall seeing a cop costume. Or did I? Maybe the costume was so darn great that I couldn’t even tell if there was a real cop present or not. Maybe the guy/girl even went out and rented a patrol car. Okay, now I’m getting a tad ridiculous. On the other hand, it could happen. Remember the guy in the cop costume on “Hocus Pocus?” He certainly fooled everyone. Come to think of it, that was a very realistic cop costume. At first I even believed the guy was a police officer. Anyway, what fun could you have with a fancy cop costume? I know what I would do. I would approach civilians and give them orders. Of course I would be sure to where a fake name badge. After all, I wouldn’t want this harmless fun to come back and haunt me once Halloween night was over. That would be a bummer. Hey, you know what I didn’t think about? High school kids might egg you if you’re sporting a realistic cop costume. Typically teenagers don’t like cops. Hmm, that’s something to consider as well.

Well, regardless of what cool and unique costume you’re busting out for All Hallows Eve, I strongly advise you to surf the costume outlets on line. Talk about variety. But be forewarned, many of these awesome get-ups go for a pretty penny.

It may seem strange to you, but in my family both the boys and the girlsloved cloth dolls. You see, my mother was an expert in making cloth dolls. She knew exactly how to go about it. She could make rag dolls, well-dressed china dolls, handmade wooden ones – you name it and she could put it together. She could make the perfect clothes for American girl dolls, dressing them up in such fancy outfits that you would practically envy them. Although none of my friends had the same cloth doll hobby that I did, and I sometimes got made fun of over it, nevertheless I have grown to treasure my toy dolls. To this day, I sew doll clothes in my spare time, and collect cloth dolls.

One of my favorite things is making clothes for my dolls. I love sewing clothes for 18 inch dolls. You see, in general I love making clothes, but it can often be an involved and time-consuming process. The great thing about learning how to make doll clothes is that it is such an easy way to create mock ups of full-size costumes. Although cloth dolls don’t show you how the outfits would look on you, they do provide you a way to cheaply and easily play with your imagination and find out what types of clothing might be worth further investigation.

My first exposure was learning to make Barbie clothing when I was a kid. You see, our cloth dolls were precious. We were very careful with them, and did not want anything to happen to them. After all, our mother made them for us, and we deeply loved the work she did. Nowadays, I still have that sort of respect for my cloth dolls. My Madame Alexander dolls, for example, never leave their display cases. They are too valuable, too perfectly made, and too fragile. The cloth dolls that I actually play with are of a much coarser grade of workmanship. Nonetheless, I love them all.

If you have ever wanted to learn to make cloth dolls, you really should try it out. It is much easier than you might think. There are all kinds of do-it-yourself guides available, so you can easily find out the information that you need. Even if your first few cloth dolls do not look very good, keep trying. After all, the point is to have fun!

Are you a horror movie nut? If so, then you are probably familiar withChucky; also known as Charles Lee Ray. Yep, that’s right; I saw the flick, and all that followed. As you may already know, this is the grim tale of a young boy, who is almost killed by a possessed “Good Guy” doll. A vicious criminal with some knowledge of voodoo and the black arts, uses his power to enter a doll just before he dies. So started the ever-popular Chucky dolls. I’m sure you’ve seen them in some random novelty store such as Spencer’s Gifts or Halloween Express. I must say that these Chucky dolls are an imperative collectible for any “Child’s Play” or just all round horror movie nuts out there. Get them while they’re still available. Who knows when the craze may end?

A few years back I purchased a couple Chucky dolls for my buddy. He is an absolute Chuck fanatic. Now, granted I too love horror films, but come on; we all know that Michael Myers is the king. The one with the white William Shatter forged mask started it all. Not to mention that he doesn’t say a word. You only hear him breathing. Now that’s spooky. Chucky on the other hand is more like a crude stand-up comedian. His slews of profanity ruin it for me. There’s just no mystery. Regardless, America fell in love with the haunting Chucky dolls right from the start. Of course there have been a few changes since the beginning of it all back in the late 80s. Now days you can also acquire the bride of Chucky dolls. That is also a must for collectors. They’re a great decoration for the Halloween holiday. So many little ones are scared of Chucky dolls already. It certainly can’t hurt anything to provide them with that extra fright.

If you are searching for Chucky dolls or any other horror flick propaganda, I suggest you either head out to the nearest Spencer’s gifts or merely hop online. If you do decide to hit up Spencer’s Gifts for Chucky dolls, then you may have to wait for September when they flood the stores with Halloween stuff. Either way, you can always find what you’re looking for on the World-Wide-Web. Find those gory Chucky dolls that would go great in your bedroom. I’m considering putting one on my wife’s night stand.

Children have such vivid imaginations and oh, do they love using them! It’s important to nurture their creative side at an early age. Not only do you thus provide kids with a lot of fun play time, but creative activities that are not bound so much by rules, but instead dependent on individual ideas, helps kids to develop skills in ‘thinking outside the box’.

Play acting is one such activity that kids can play with a parent, another child or a group of kids. This kid’s activity is greatly enhanced with a collection of childrens costumes you and your children can make, at little cost and time.

Let’s take a look at just a few ideas for childrens costumes that provide hours of fun and developmental education. Both boys and girls get behind the costume games.

1. The fairy princess children’s costume is invariably a girl’s favorite. A couple of yards of netting can be gathered at the waistline with a basting stitch on the sewing machine and then fixed with elastic a few inches smaller than the child’s waist. A plain colored tee-shirt may be decorated with glow-in-the-dark star stickers on the front and back of the shirt, tiny rose appliqués or a length of frilly lace around the neckline. To complete this children’s costume, you can make a shiny wand of gold cardboard in the shape of a star, and purchase an inexpensive dime store tiara bedecked with rhinestones.

2. Robin Hood and Medieval knight’s costumes are among the top choices with boys. For Robin Hood, a square of green felt is easily stitched with just three pieces, two triangular pieces for the cap, with the third piece stitched around the cap for a brim. Add a feather, affixed with a glue gun. His tunic is simple, made of brown felt, in two pieces, with a V-shaped neckline in the front and large sleeves that are easy to pull over his head. (Felt is a good children’s costume material, as it requires no hemming.) Transform this tunic into a knight’s armor, using navy blue felt and a silver permanent marking pen to draw shiny links for a realistic look worthy of Prince Valiant. A piece of sturdy silver colored cardboard, with the hilt decorated with sparkling rhinestone jewels makes a handsome accessory indeed.

3. Cowboys, cowgirls and Native American childrens costumes are more perennial kid’s favorites. All of these costumes work well in felt. Fringes attached to cowboy and girl vests and a simple skirt or pair of chaps, both fringed, is a hit. Adorn these costumes with dime store silver stars and, don’t forget the bandanna and hat! Beads on felt tunics and leggings make a handsome Native American costume, along with a long, black wig, which can flow loosely; kept in place with a beaded band you purchase, or make with that handy glue gun.

You can see how easy it is to create an entire wardrobe of kid’s costumes. Let the kids pick the costume of their choice. Pirates, cartoon action characters and any of the Disney movie characters are ever popular. Accessories can be interchangeable with different costumes too. The Medieval knight’s sword can fill in for Jafar’s sword and the tiara or a Princess’ veil can serve in a number of roles. Who knows but that the kids may turn into budding actors, staging their own play with their easy and inexpensive childrens costumes? Invite all the parents to the performance!

When I was growing up, my parents always had the best child party ideas. They would always have tons of kid party games whenever we were having an event. It didn’t matter what kind of party it was – whether it was a birthday party, or just a normal sleepover party – they always made things great. Our family get-togethers were always a rare treat, but the child birthday party ideas were always the best.

Your typical child party idea is something like this: the parents put together a theme by decorating in a certain style. For example, one of the most popular child party ideas for boys is to have a cowboy party. All the kids are given novelty cowboy hats and plastic pistols, and the cake has fake cactuses on it.

With my parents child party ideas, however, things went far beyond this. One of my favorite kid parties was when my parents decided to organize a treasure hunt. When each guest came in, they were given costumes. Everyone had a bandanna to wear, a plastic eye patch, and either a flintlock pistol or a sword. The child party idea was to give each of us a map and set us loose. We were all on a quest to find a buried treasure. Each of us had a part of the secret, but none of us had the whole thing. All of the different maps fit together, so when we all worked together we could find it. When we found that treasure, we were absolutely overjoyed.

I have never been quite as good at finding child party ideas as my parents, but nonetheless I have had a few good ones. Mostly, when I am short of child party ideas, I will do a search for them on the Internet. Although I can get child party ideas from my mom, I don’t like to. You see, I would much rather get my child party idea from the Internet. That way, I can pass it off as my own, and no one will ever be the wiser. In the last couple years, we have had some great child parties too! My kids will do practically anything that I asked them to if there is hope of a party or get together of some kind within the next couple of months. Although I hate to bribe them, I have to admit that it works!

Almost everyone has some sort of memory about dressing up as a kid. Formany of us, it was just an occasional interest – one of many childhood games. On the other hand, for some people, playing dress up was a central part of childhood. I have a friend who used to go into her parents room pretty much every day, and try on anything that she could get a hold of. She grew up to be a fashion designer, just as everyone who knew her expected. Anyone that into child costumes was destined to either do fashion or theater.

My parents were never that into buying child costumes for us, and my parents were both pretty protective of their clothes. As a result, we would have to make do with whatever we could find. A big source of supplies was my older sister. She had a lot of scarves, vests, belts, and other fun things you could wrap or tie around your body. We would also sometimes wear clothes backwards as a way to change our look. And of course, there was always the option of wrapping yourself up in a bed sheet when nothing else was available.

Still, my favorite child costumes were the special ones my parents would help us with. Pretty much every year, we would spend nearly a week making child Halloween costumes as a family. My mom knew how to sew very well, although she did not use the skill very often, and she always outdid herself in making the best child costume whenever we had a costume party to go to. She would also volunteer with the school drama program when we were in the play. I had the honor of going on stage in some of her very best child costumes.

Then again, sometimes it was a lot of fun to improvise. My folks did not like to see us playing war games, so if we wanted to play them we had to do it covertly. We would sneak outside with sashes tied around our waists as sword belts, and then pickup sticks in the back yard to swing menacingly at dragons. In some ways, these were the best child costumes of all, because they brought me together with my siblings. Sneaking around and trying not to get caught is always an exciting thing for a child to do. In retrospect, I think that our parents must have had some sort of idea what we were up to at the time, but they acted none the wiser. Maybe it was just nice for them to see how well we were getting along. Whatever it was, we sure had a lot of fun being cowboys, pirates, ninjas, and knights.

I don’t think there’s a woman alive who doesn’t love jewelry. We all have a few good pieces, but those precious gems and 24-karat gold are pricey. Besides, we don’t want to wear a diamond tennis bracelet to work and lose it on the metro! However, jewelry is the icing on the cake of any outfit. Costume jewelry is the solution for every day wear. Now, different women have different ideas about differentiating costume jewelry and cheap costume jewelry. There’s cheap, as in cheaply made and then there’s cheap, as in inexpensive. It’s the inexpensive type of cheap costume jewelry we’re after. The less you have to spend, the more jewelry you can have for those every day occasions. Here we have several suggestions on how to fill out your inexpensive cheap jewelry wardrobe, with fabulous looks.

Ethnic fashions are in vogue now and ethnic clothing shops are springing up all over, both online and downtown. These clothing shops always carry a line of ethnic jewelry to pair with their lineup of clothing. Typically, ethnic jewelry is not made of precious stones, or expensive metals. Here, you’ll find handmade costume jewelry made of local materials, with beads, jute, semi-precious stones or just plain glass. The price tag says this is cheap costume jewelry, but it looks lovely and unusual.

Craft fairs are great sources of cheap costume jewelry. Lots of costume jewelry designers rent booths at these craft fairs, bringing their entire inventory with them. Most of these designers don’t even have a shop, so they can sell their jewelry at a much better price than you’d pay in a shop at the mall. They work out of their homes, making handmade jewelry which is often one of a kind. If you make the rounds at the craft fairs, you don’t need a big budget to pick up several nice pieces of the inexpensive, but cheap jewelry.

Thrift shops are another terrific place to shop for cheap costume jewelry. Many of the items you’ll find are retro pieces, some dating back many decades. The thrift shop finds may remind you of your Grandma’s jewelry case, with stylish designs that are inexpensive and now trendy additions to your jewelry box.

Online costume jewelry shops are another resource for cheap costume jewelry. Like the craft fair jewelry makers, their overhead is minimal, so you’ll find innovative designs at a good price. Check out the online ethnic shops too.

Our suggestions wouldn’t be complete without pointing you to eBay. While you can find diamond rings, the largest selection is in cheap costume jewelry of the inexpensive type. Much of the collections are retro pieces, usually one of a kind. If you’re a smart bidder, you can find some exciting pieces to add to your collection. This is a huge market, so if you scan the shops every day, you’re sure to find some fabulous and yet cheap costume jewelry.

After browsing all of these resources, you may be inspired to make your own costume jewelry pieces. Sign up for a junior college or community class and learn to design and make your own jewelry!

With the popularity of Cats the musical, it is surprising how many people have never seen it. Almost everyone has seen a least part of Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables at some point, but the musical Cats still seems to be sort of a niche thing. I think that is a shame. Cats the musical has something for everyone. For kids, it is obvious: the costumes, the dancing, and the silly songs are a kids dream. Even for adults, however, there are some great features of the story. Usually, the directing is very good and the actors are excellent. They consistently find people who can handle both the vocals and the acting amazingly well. The composition is much better than with most musicals – I have seen it five times, and it hasn’t gotten boring.

Not all productions of cats in musical are the same, however. The best place to see it in my opinion is on Broadway. Broadway musicals are always top-notch. There is such a theatergoing community there that, between the tourists and locals, they can sustain a top-notch production month after month, year after year. The actors change, but the overall quality remains the same. It will absolutely knock your socks off!

My kids liked Cats the musical so much when we saw it that they wanted to dress up like the characters. It wasn’t anywhere near Halloween, but I thought I’d indulge them. You see, in my family we really value the arts. Anything that encourages my kids creativity is something I’m willing to support. As such, we went out and bought supplies for cats costumes. We bought masks, fake fur, and a variety of other supplies. Over the weekend, we cobble together our own Cats the musical costumes.

My kids even insisted on putting on their own individual production of the Cats musical. It was a lot of fun seeing them prance around, trying out the songs themselves. They remembered some of the lyrics, and made up some of their own. I was surprised how much they practiced it. When they were done, they really had a good performance. I know that my opinion as a parent is biased, but it was still one of the most impressive things that I have ever seen them do. I filmed the whole thing, and years from now plan on showing it to their boyfriends and girlfriends. That will be fun!
